As you take care of your baby throughout your pregnancy, it’s important that you also take care of your oral health. So, in order to maintain a strong, healthy, and beautiful smile, please complete the following tasks:
Keep up on oral hygiene
Oral hygiene is vital during your pregnancy, so make sure you brush your teeth twice a day, floss your smile once a day, and rinse your mouth with mouthwash daily. As you do these things, it’s very important that you use the right tools. The best tools to use are those that have been approved by the American Dental Association.
Talk to your dentist
Make sure you attend your dental checkups and cleanings every six months. When you come into our office, tell your dentist that you are pregnant so we can treat your smile accordingly. We also ask you to tell us about any medications you are taking.
Watch for changes in the mouth
Do your best to watch out for any changes in your mouth, like red, swollen, or bleeding gums. We also encourage you to look out for red, raspberry-like sores that are extremely tender. These are signs of both pregnancy gingivitis and pregnancy tumors. If you see these signs, call our office and schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
Have a healthy diet
Having a healthy diet will help you and it will also help the baby. So, make sure you get enough vitamin A, C, and D as well as enough protein and calcium each day. We also ask that you keep snacking down to a minimum and you integrate more fruits, vegetables, yogurt, and cheese into your diet.
Deal with morning sickness
If you are frequently throwing up because of morning sickness, we ask that you prevent tooth decay by rinsing your mouth with a teaspoon of baking soda and water. This will keep the acid from attacking your smile.
