Baby bottle tooth decay and early childhood caries are major dental problems that frequently destroy children’s smiles. If you want to keep your child’s chompers safe from these dental issues, our team at Smiles Dental encourages you to do the following things:
Begin an oral hygiene routine early
Before your child’s teeth grow into place, clean their gums with a clean gauze pad or washcloth. Cleaning the gums will help wash away the plaque that waits to attack your child’s teeth.
Care for the teeth
When your child’s teeth grow in, clean them with a child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush the teeth gently and be careful around the gums. As you brush, only use a small amount of toothpaste—about the size of a pea.
Be careful with bottle feedings
If you fill your child’s bottle with sugary drinks, especially before taking a nap or going to bed, your child can easily suffer from baby bottle tooth decay. So, we strongly recommend only putting milk, breast milk, and baby formula into the bottle. Also, please make sure your child finishes the bottle before they hit the pillow.
